As a Financial Planner, my goal is to help you, my friends and clients to navigate the ups and downs of your financial journey with confidence and clarity. The recently released 2025 Financial Stress Index by FP Canada offers valuable insights into the financial challenges Canadians are facing—and highlights the positive impact professional planning can have on your financial well-being.
Money: Still the Top Source of Stress
Year after year, money remains the leading cause of stress for Canadians, surpassing concerns about health, relationships, and work. In fact, the number of people who say money is their biggest stressor has been steadily increasing over the past five years.
You’re not alone if you feel this way. The survey found that the most common stressors continue to be grocery prices (64%) and inflation (54%), though these numbers have improved slightly since last year. However, housing costs—including rent, mortgages, and home prices—are now causing more stress than ever, affecting 53% of Canadians in 2025.
Understanding the Barriers to Financial Wellness
For the first time, the Index explored the psychological barriers that prevent many people from taking control of their finances. The findings were eye-opening:
- Fear of making the wrong decision (52%)
- Procrastination due to stress or anxiety (43%)
- Feeling overwhelmed (41%) · Not knowing where to start (35%)
If you recognize yourself in these numbers, know that you’re not alone. These feelings are common and overcoming them is a crucial step towards financial wellness.
How We Can Help
One of the most encouraging findings from the 2025 Index is the significant difference professional financial advice can make. Canadians who work with a financial planner like myself report much lower levels of financial stress (34%) than those who go it alone (48%). Even more importantly, 60% of those who receive professional guidance feel hopeful about their financial future, compared to just 48% of those without support.
As your planner, my role is to:
- Educate and empower you to make informed decisions
- Demystify financial concepts so you feel confident, not overwhelmed
- Provide actionable advice tailored to your unique situation
- Support you emotionally as well as financially, helping you overcome the psychological barriers that may be holding you back
Moving Forward Together
Financial stress is real, but it’s not insurmountable. By working together, we can create a plan that addresses your concerns, builds your confidence, and puts you on the path to a brighter financial future.
