One hundred years ago, Canada adopted what would become the symbol of remembrance for millions of Canadians and veterans in our country.

On July 6, 1921, Canada became the first country to support the poppy as a symbol of remembrance.

It started during the First World War when Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, a Canadian Medical officer wrote his famous poem, In Flanders Fields.

A French woman, Madame Anna Guérin, heard that poem and was inspired to create and sell fabric poppies to help rebuild regions of France destroyed by war and to help with the needs of Veterans.

In 1921 she traveled to Canada where she then shared her idea of using the poppy as a symbol of remembrance and to raise funds.   It was during this visit when the Canadian Great War Veterans Association (Royal Canadian Legion) adopted her idea and the first poppy day in Canada took place on November 11, 1921.  Since then, for 100 years the Royal Canadian Legion and its members have upheld this tradition of Remembrance.

Today, millions of Canadians wear the poppy in the weeks leading up to and on November 11th, to remember and honour the sacrifice of Canada’s Fallen.

The Royal Canadian Legion is looking forward to regaining some sense of normalcy this year as there are fewer health restrictions in place. The Legion estates 20 million poppies will be distributed throughout Canada during the campaign. Additional donations can be made through their website   However, take note, The Royal Canadian Legion is a non-profit organization and therefore you will not receive a tax receipt for you support.

The 2021 poppy campaign has begun.

Have a nice weekend,

Tracey
